Wednesday 2nd August Cardwell Van Park

More rain! On the local TV news last night it was reported that Queensland had experienced its wettest July for many, many years but also its warmest. July is meant to be the month in the middle of the dry season here. Anyway we decided to do the Cardwell Forest drive and had our fingers crossed that the rain would stay away. Our first stop on the drive was the Cardwell lookout. We had visited this spot before but decided to walk the steep track again, hoping that it would be worth it. It was invigorating but with the inclement weather, the view was not that spectacular. From here we visited Attie Creek Falls. By this stage of our trip, we have seen so many waterfalls, you would think we would be tired of them but that is not the case. With all the rain we’ve had most of the falls which under normal conditions may not have much of a flow over them, are quite spectacular with so much water! The walk to the Attie Creek falls was again quite a strenuous uphill climb but certainly worth the spectacular view of the falls. We were able to rest next to a large pool at the base of the main falls. It was beautiful. Continuing on, we drove to our next stop, Dead Horse Creek and finished at a gorgeous spot, The Natural Spa Pools. Unfortunately by the time we arrived here the rain had set in. I had thought that I’d go for a swim here but the rain put me off. One brave woman was heading for the pools for a swim in the rain. We could imagine how good this area would be for a swim, with its peaceful, iridescent blue pools but couldn’t be tempted. We headed back to Cardwell and had our packed picnic lunch while wandering along more of the foreshore area. We spent the afternoon back at the van relaxing and watching the rain continuing to fall.
