Rob thought he’d play golf this morning
so we headed back to Monto. He had the course to himself which considering everything
was not surprising. It was both hilly and quite windy so playing 9 holes was
probably going to be enough. After Rob had set out, I drove into the town of
Monto to do some more exploring. I went for a walk in the centre of town,
visiting the tourist information centre and viewing some of the murals painted
on the buildings. I stopped for a coffee before heading to see a magnificent
mural on some wheat silos just out of town. I then visited a local heritage
museum which had a variety of old relocated buildings and many, many old pieces
of machinery. Although some of the buildings were not open it was still
interesting to wander through the large area that the village occupied. Not
long after I arrived, an older gentleman drove up and spoke to me. He was a
member of the Monto Historical Association and had come to drop some things
into one of the buildings. He was very interesting and said he would happily
open up all the buildings if I wanted. I explained that I was waiting for Rob
to call me when he had completed his golf and that I would have to go soon.
Anyway he showed me into the building that he had to open up which was once a
school hall, built in the 1920’s and shifted to the area. I had seen 1940’s
plane (WW11 Liberator, 1/5 replica) and read about the tragic crash of this
plane in 1945. The actual wreckage was not discovered until 1994. The remains of
the men were sent to Arlington Cemetery in the US. I commented on how
interesting this all was and obviously said the correct thing as this gentleman
had been one of the volunteers to build the replica! Rob soon phoned me and I
headed out to the golf course to collect him. We returned to Monto and had a
lovely lunch at one of the old pubs. We then headed back to the caravan park
where Rob was “swarmed” with brightly coloured parrots while trying to eat his
apple.
