Tuesday 22nd August Burnett Heads Holiday Park

Today we left the beautiful Cania Gorge heading for our next destination of Burnett Heads. Our journey took us through some mountainous country and even (for short stretch) on a gravel road. We drove through some new small towns like Mount Perry and on roads we hadn’t been on in the past. We were on familiar roads again once we drove into Gin Gin and we stopped here at a favourite cafĂ©, that we had used last year, before heading to Burnett Heads. Burnett heads is located a few kilometres from Bundaberg, close to the mouth of the Burnett River. After setting up and having some lunch we went for a quick drive to the nearby marina. As the weather for tomorrow looks pretty good we decided to book a full day cruise to lady Musgrave Island, involving, snorkelling, touring in a glass-bottom boat and guided walks on the island. The “Reef Empress” leaves from the marina nearby so it makes arriving on time for the early start, a little easier. We finished the day with a long walk, out to the point where the light-house is and then around to a nearby beach. The current lighthouse was built in 1972 to replace the previous one which was built in 1873 and was made from wood. The brick base of the old lighthouse could be seen on the property. The “new” automatic lighthouse was very unusual with a shiny, white tiled outer cladding. The old lighthouse was taken down and rebuilt in a park adjacent to our caravan park. It had been beautifully restored in recent years.
