Wednesday 9th August Mirani Caravan Park

Our journey was another short one today. We travelled the 120km in about 90minutes. The small town of Mirani is inland from Mackay, close to the large Kinchant Dam and on the banks of the Pioneer River. When we arrived at the park which is run by the council, we were extremely impressed. Beautiful, grassy sites and only $25 a night for a powered site. A team (of mainly women) were mowing, whipper snippering and blowing the cuttings away from all the sites. The park is located next to the council swimming pool and the amenities are immaculate.  It would have to be one of the best parks we have stayed at. We were all set up by 11am so we headed out to explore. We visited the nearby Kinchant Dam, checked out the local 18 hole golf course, visited the nearby town of Marian and went to a spot on the river in Mirani called Platypus Beach. Swimming, kayaking and other water activities were quite safe here. Following lunch I decided that a kayak on the Pioneer River would be nice as once again the wind was up and the nearby dam was not quite as inviting. Rob dropped me of at Platypus Beach and then headed out to the golf course to play another 9 holes of golf while I kayaked. This all worked very well. Rob enjoyed his time on the very nice course and I had fun in the river. At one point I decided to take on some rapids going, against them! This really made my heart pump. It was fun negotiating the rapids on my return journey. On my way back I found a spot close to where we put the kayak in, where platypuses were out and about. I sat here in the kayak and enjoyed watching the platypuses. Unfortunately they are very quick and my attempts at photographing them were not the best. After Rob had finished his round of golf, he returned to the river to pick me up. He had enjoyed his golf and was pleased with the way he had played.

Look for the Platypus!
