Thursday 17th August Lake Awoonga Caravan Park

Yesterday we had spent some time checking out places where we could put the kayak in on the Boyne River and I would kayak down to Tannum Sands. Rob had found a good place to put the kayak in and although it was about an 11 km. kaya, we had checked out the tide times to make it a bit easier for me. We returned to the spot today and just before we drove down to the bank of the river, I noticed a warning sign for crocodiles.  Although we could see people walking their dogs and letting them swim in the river, we decided that it wouldn’t be a good idea for me to go kayaking on my own. We returned to Lake Awoonga and Rob helped me put the kayak in the beautiful, calm lake waters.  While we were doing this, a couple of blokes and two boys were also putting their fishing boat in. I asked one of the men who was a local, about kayaking on the Boyne River and the fact that there was a crocodile sign there. He laughed and said there has never been a croc reported in the river. He said that people regularly swim in the river and that his boys regularly jump off the bridge into the water. I enjoyed a long kayak in calm waters over to the other side of the lake but by the time I decided to return, the wind had spring up. It was very tough going in the middle of the lake with white caps etc. and I had to work very hard to get back. Rob had been busy defrosting the fridge and doing other jobs while I was out on the water. After lunch we drove to Gladstone and went to the cinema to see Oppenheimer. We both thoroughly enjoyed the movie which went for 3 hours. Following this we went out for dinner at a nearby pub. The weather was very mild and we sat outside on the deck enjoying our meals.
