Sunday 6th August Gunna-Go Holiday Park, Proserpine

Leaving Crystal Cascades today, in delightful weather conditions, we gradually made our way south to the town of Proserpine. The traffic nearing the city of Townsville was heavy despite being a Sunday. This was due to the motorway that is being constructed to service the constantly expanding city. We were quite amazed at how many new housing estates were under construction. From here we drove on to Ayr stopping at about the only place that was open (very few places open on Sunday in Queensland), a petrol station with attached food and cafĂ© shop, for coffee. We   drove on and experienced a slow drive near Bowen where the Bruce Highway is under-going extensive upgrades. We were not in any hurry so it didn’t worry us. On arriving at our park in Proserpine, we were told that our site had had some extra gravel laid on to the front area of the site. This was due to the unprecedented amount of rain Proserpine has received over the past few weeks. We understood what they meant. The beautiful grassy sites were more like a quagmire but the park managers had done their best. We headed into town after setting up but like many small places in Queensland, Sunday afternoons are very quiet with only a few places open.  We checked out the golf course and it was extremely busy! Rob was hoping that he might be able to play here but after doing some investigating, we found out that there is a veteran’s competition on at the moment. They are playing in Proserpine on Mon. and Tues. and then moving on to other towns later in the week. Rob isn’t sure if he’ll be able to play. The course certainly looked in great condition despite the wet conditions they’ve had. From here we drove out to Peter Faust Dam (Lake Proserpine). The lake is huge and the camping area down near the lake was very busy. I’m not sure if I’ll kayak here. It certainly would need to be much calmer than it was today. The wind was whipping across the lake and conditions would have very difficult. Still there is plenty to do around here with nice drives to the Whitsunday coast.
