Today we moved on to our next destination, Cania Gorge. It took us about 3 hours, with a stop at Biloela for coffee. We both decided that the Sunrise Bakery here, was probably the best bakery we had visited on this trip so far. Consequently, we left with more than just coffee. Our new park is magnificent. It is quite remote and set in beautiful bushland with huge gum trees, large sites, and friendly fauna living in the park quite comfortably with people. It has great facilities for families with, a pool, water-park, pedal cars, tennis and volley ball courts, wine tasting sessions on Saturdays and more!. After setting up, we drove the short distance to Cania Lake/Dam. Another dam completed in the 1980’s, with the small settlement of Cania, now under the water. Some of the headstones from the old cemetery had been relocated and a list of people’s names who had been buried, there was on a plaque overlooking the lake. This area had once been a thriving gold-mining area from the 1880’s and up to 1,600 people had lived here. From the lake area we drove to a carpark, where we could take a short uphill walk to the Shamrock Mine site. Placed along the trail were information boards about gold mining in the area. We enjoyed this walk and then returned to the van to relax with the local wallabies and kangaroos visiting us while we had a pre-dinner drink.
