Saturday 12th August Lake Maraboon Holiday Village

It was a beautiful day and the lake looked very inviting so after a slow start Rob helped me put the kayak in and I went for a 2 hour kayak. I enjoyed exploring the area nearby, watching a SES training group heading out in boats, others, water-skiing behind boats and of course the many boats heading to different spots to fish. My favourite place that I discovered and named “Turtle Corner”, was a quiet spot, not too far away from the busy launching area. As I kayaked to this area, I saw all these little heads popping out of the water and disappearing as soon as I was anywhere near them. It didn’t take me long to realise that the heads belonged to turtles. I spent a lot of time in this area, sitting still on the kayak and watching the heads of the turtles pop up and down. I would estimate that there was at least 100 turtles in this small area. After a couple of hours on the water I returned to the launch area and met Rob. We had lunch and then went for a short drive to check out the Fairbairn Dam wall and spillway as well as other nearby lookout spots. As the afternoon wore on, the wind completely dropped out and the water on the lake was dead calm. We had left the kayak on the shore of the lake so I decided to head out for a late afternoon kayak on the beautiful calm water as the sun was setting.
