We had another short journey today so after packing up at Bargara we drove out of the caravan park and parked the car and van! As the park was next to the foreshore we decided to go for a walk before leaving for our next destination. We enjoyed the walk and saw a couple of brave souls in the water, body surfing. The beaches of Bargara have a large black, basalt boulders on them, a result of an active volcano about 1 million years ago. Following our walk, we started our short journey to our next caravan park. We decided to stop at the busy, historical town of Childers for a walk and a coffee break. Childers was once the heart of the sugar cane industry in its early days but is now a “National Trust” town full of beautiful old buildings and its main industry is tourism. The town was so busy! Full of older tourists like us, in caravans, coach trips etc. The main street of the town is quite beautiful with gardens down the middle. We found a fabulous cafĂ© in a building, with lots of history and enjoyed watching this busy little town, while having coffee. We went for a walk and stopped for a short time at the town’s war memorial. Childers was one of 2 Queensland towns to be “awarded” a Howitzer cannon for a WW1 memorial. The memorial also contained beautiful black granite walls, adorned with poppies. It was an impressive memorial for this tiny town. Continuing on for about another 30 minutes we soon reached our next destination of Burrum Heads, a quaint, sleepy holiday village located on the mouth of the Burrum River. We were very lucky as our site is very close to the riverfront and we have lovely views of the mouth of the river. We spent the afternoon exploring the nearby area by car and then walking along the esplanade path, just a few metres from our caravan and finally, enjoying a gorgeous sunset.
