We woke to a lovely calm morning and so I had no excuse for not putting the kayak in the water. Rob had some jobs to do trying to fix a TV problem so he was happy to help me put the kayak in and then go back to complete the jobs while I went kayaking. We put the kayak in on the Mary River at the boat ramp near the Maryborough Bridge. While we were there a local said I should try to kayak to the bridge and ramp at Tinana. I accepted this challenge. Although I was kayaking against the flow it was fairly easy for the first hour. I didn’t realise that the Mary River was also tidal and so for about 30 minutes it was really hard going. I spent nearly 3 hours kayaking and was pretty pleased with myself. The river was very peaceful and I only encountered 2 boats but many water birds. After lunch I did some more walking and exploring while Rob did some more shopping and maintenance work. While I was walking I did discover something interesting in the CBD of Maryborough. The pedestrian crossing lights didn’t have the normal red man for don’t walk and green man for walk but had Mary Poppins instead. I vaguely remembered that the author of Mary Poppins had a connection with Maryborough and by “googling” it, this was confirmed. Maryborough was the birthplace of P.L Travers, the author of Mary Poppins. Rob and I will be doing a free guided, history walking tour tomorrow so we may find out more.
